The Snaps Collection from Hubbardton Forge

I am always searching for unique lighting options for clients, and Hubbardton Forge has just released a new collection that fits the bill. Called Snaps, the configurable design features differing lengths of leather strapping (in brown, black, or white!) punctuated by round LED lights housed in alabaster, all held together with riveted snaps! As you can see below, it looks great in many settings and provides a great sculptural focal point.

I am excited to use the Snaps Collection in a project! Contact me if you want to include Snaps in your remodeled space.

The Future of Lighting Is Now

I am beyond excited with the possibilities of the amazing fixtures Chicago-based PureEdge Lighting are creating. Their Tru Line series shouldn't even be called "fixtures" because they are installed into walls and ceilings, becoming part of the structure of the building itself. Lines of embedded LED lights can run across a ceiling and down a wall...

...or wrap around a corner. They can be used in places where traditional fixtures cannot.

Tru Line can offer illumination in crucial areas like stairways.

My imagination is already running, thinking of ways this product can be incorporated into a design. The possibilities seem nearly endless.

Stickbulb

We started this month looking at the history of white plaster lighting fixtures, and in contrast to the artisan-made tactility of those fixtures, let's look at a company integrating LED into extremely minimalist designs using slim rectangles of wood.

Stickbulb was formed in 2012 by Russell Greenberg and Christopher Beardsley. Inspired by a pile of long linear wooden cut-offs in their workshop, the designers challenged themselves to develop a truly sustainable lighting system. As a starting point, they only considered designs that could be manufactured locally and affordably within a five mile radius of their New York City office. They chose to use reclaimed and sustainably sourced woods as a primary building material, and sourced energy efficient LED technologies and components. The collection was designed with the least number of parts possible and with connections that make the pieces easy to separate for maintenance, recycling, or reuse. The result is a light-up erector set of interchangeable components that allows for unlimited customization and creativity.

They make a wonderful collection of pendants, chandeliers, sconces, and floor lamps. Take a look at the strong line of the pieces below.

The ATMOS LED Skylight by Innerscene

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan Clark, CEO of Innerscene, Inc. who makes a revolutionary product called ATMOS. In the Innerscene Mobile Showroom, I was able to see firsthand, their jaw-dropping ATMOS skylight.

ATMOS recreates the appearance of a natural sun and sky in any environment day or night. Vivid beams of light are cast into the room from an ultra-bright distant 3D sun which appears to move in parallel with the viewer. A bright distant sun can be seen when looking towards the sky. When one or two dimension arrays of ATMOS are installed each person in the room will always only see one sun. Just like real windows, the sun’s position in the sky is determined by your viewing angle rather than your position.

Even though this is an LED array, I was blown away by being able to see an actual orb, like the sun itself.

From sunrise to sunset, ATMOS changes the colors and intensities of the artificial sky throughout the day to replicate the effects natural light has on our circadian rhythm.

What was particularly delightful was that the same orb I saw as the sun became a full moon during the night phase of the program! Once my eyes became dark-adapted, I could see the soft silver-y glow of moonlight on the floor and look up and see a round white moon.

I can see a host of wonderful uses for this product, especially in areas of commercial or residential spaces where a skylight is impractical or simply impossible, like a basement or interior space that has no outlet to an exterior surface. To have the similar lux and color temperature as the sun and being able to feel like you are connected to the outside, natural world even though you might not be seems to me to be miraculous. What an incredible product. For more information, visit the Innerscene site and read about ATMOS.

A Kitchen Light That Kills Bacteria and Germs!

Here is an amazing new product I must share with you. A company called Vital Vio in Troy, New York has created a light fixture that actually destroys germs and bacteria. This promises to be a valuable addition to the design and lighting of hospitals, gyms, restaurants, airplanes, and offices, but also residential kitchens as well, where germs on counters are prevalent and food safety is a top priority. Called ellumi™, Vital Vio’s White Light Disinfection™ LED Technology uses photo-activation to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which causes irreparable damage to the cellular structure of bacteria and germs.

Their website states:

Make ellumi™ work for you

*Continuous around the clock cleaning so you don't have to

*Built in dimmer switch so you control the amount of light

*Direct-Mount or Plug-in let's you choose the best installation for your home

*LED light provides energy savings which means more money in your pocket

How ellumi™ Works

University researchers have proven that specific wavelengths of light actually inhibit bacteria reproduction and destroy cells.

This is effective on Strep, Staph/MRSA, E. Coli, Salmonella and 18 other bacteria.

The light excites certain molecules in harmful microorganisms through photo-activation.

These molecules produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), causing cell wall damage and death over time.

The units are available in four sizes and range in price from $100 to $200.

While the profile is a bit chunky, it can be hidden with the addition of a rail. And eventually, I am sure they will make a tape strip like most LED under-cabinet lighting available now.

Abstract Lighting by Sonneman

River stones inspired the new Abstract series of LED lights by Sonneman. The organically shaped white metal panels diffuse the light, making these fixtures intriguing additions to any space. They are modern but their simplicity would allow them to fit into transitional or even traditional design schemes. And the sinuous lines speak to the natural world, something that is making its way into our homes more and more with biophilic design.

“Driven to discover new insight and to test boundaries, our creative process achieved a new wave of sculptural expression,” says founder Robert Sonneman. “In our pursuit of technology-driven design, we took functional decorative to a fresh aesthetic with new forms and materials.”

The Abstract Rhythms series comes in different sizes and configurations...

...while the Abstract Panel sconces come in 18 or 14.5 inches.

Element Reflections Recessed LED Lighting by Tech Lighting

Over the years, I've heard a smattering of clients express their dislike for the common recessed ceiling light, claiming that it makes a ceiling look like Swiss cheese. But what if the recessed light was more than just a housing for the bulb? What if it was an actual decorative element in and of itself?

To this end, the modern lighting company Tech Lighting has created a new kind of recessed light. Called Element Reflections, the concept is an LED ring light which bounces light up into a decorative reflector dome to cast diffused illumination down onto a space.

The inner reflective dome comes in five different styles.

Bloom reflector dome
Dune reflector dome
Fleur reflector dome
Skye reflector dome
Torus reflector dome

The apertures are available in three different sizes, 5", 8" and 12". And each light can be further customized by coming with a flange (or trim kit as it sometimes called) or without a flange to be plastered into the ceiling plane.

Here are some images of the Bloom reflector in situ...

...and here is the more modern Dune dome.

The Fleur dome is possibly the most decorative of all and could enhance traditional decors...

This seems to be an elegant solution to the "Swiss cheese ceiling" effect!
