"The Birds and the Bees" Bathroom by Fiorito Interior Design
When a client with an attached ADU asked me to remodel the tired 1990s bathroom, I looked to her love of nature and sparkle to create what I call “The Birds and the Bees Bathroom.” She wanted a tub-shower combo removed in favor of a curbless walk-in shower so I took advantage of this change to use a focal point as an anchor for the now-barrier free shower at the end of the room. I chose a large porcelain mural reminiscent of lyrical botanical illustrations from the early 1900s, complete with birds perched on colorful flowering branches. My client fell in love with a dimensional glass tile in the shape of a honeycomb in an equally honey-colored hue—a reference to life-giving bees—which I used to frame the mural and line the shower niche. The shower walls are clad with porcelain tiles that mimic the look of Cloud Onyx without the tedious maintenance such a fragile stone requires. The easy-care porcelain tiles on the floor look like plank wood and lend an organic sense, and are complimented by the rich wood vanity. The end result is like showering in a bright, fresh garden!
If you have a tired bathroom that needs waking, give me a call!

Fantastic FEATHR
Regular readers may recall my love of wallcoverings, and I must profess my love for the Finnish wallcovering company FEATHR, founded by friends Tom, Anne, and Oli. I'm itching to find a client who will love these patterns as much as I do.
Their company creates amazing wallpapers and murals like this gorgeous watercolor series by LA artist Stacy Solodkin.
Artist Magnus Gjoen has created several marvelous wallcoverings for FEATHR that riff on the ideas of Neo-Classical, Georgian, and Victorian wallcoverings but with a wry, modern twist.
His "Flower Bomb" paper looks like a typical design featuring a spray of flowers but when studied closely, that spray is in the shape of a missile.
Gjoen's incredibly realistic trompe-l'œil paper "Victory Over Ignorance" is startling in its depth. The red stripes actually seem to hover over the antique black and white botanical etchings below.
And finally, what self respecting Victorian would not love this florid, Flemish-flowered paper with hidden skulls.
The papers from their regular lines are just as wonderful. I love the Art Deco vibe of this design called "Ember."
The mash up of graffiti and oil paint is exciting in "Glowing Shards Blue."
Take a look at the tranquility of "Ornament," "Oslo," and "Raindrops."
And "Superabstract" is a fun homage to the graphics of the 60s and 70s while "Utopia" is pure 1980s Memphis style!
If you think you could be "that client" who might love these papers as much as I do, give me a call and let's create something!

Focal Point: A Key To Successful Design
Every successful room needs a focal point to help center and ground the space. Building a room around a focal point or feature lends an air of balance, variety, interest...it brings to a room that extra something special.
Some rooms have architectural features that are clear focal points like fireplaces.
If a room does not have a ready-made focal point, often it will have a "feature" wall. This is usually the wall that your eye naturally falls to when you enter the space. Bedrooms often have a long(er) blank wall that seems a perfect spot for the bed. This is more often than not the feature wall. Your focal point can be a luxurious padded wall that acts as a headboard, below...
...or a full wall of drapery to soften the room...
...or take the idea of fabric on the wall and allow it to become a canopy.
A grand piece of statement art above the bed can create a wonderful focal point, bringing in extra layers of color and texture.
Or turn the piece of art into a wall mural for extra impact.
Many times a space does not have a focal point in the room...but outside of it. Windows can be natural focal points as well, drawing the eye out to a view beyond. Arrange furniture and furnishings in the room to take advantage of this!
And finally, homes and especially apartments often lack any kind of focal point, whether it is an architectural feature or a window. In these cases, use art to create a focal point as we discussed in bedrooms above. Jay Jeffers used an exquisite Asian image to draw attention to a wall...
...while interior designer Joshua Greene used a gorgeous, modern, abstract painting to anchor an arrangement in his living room.
